I AM A MECHANIC: WITH G_D’S HELP I CAN FIX IT: – THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX — CREATIVE IMAGINATION

René Descartes

Style: Contemporary A Cappella (Uptempo, dynamic, and uplifting)

[Verse 1]

Soprano (Lead):

We’ve been tracing the same old lines,

Standing on the safe side of the grand design.

But the lid is only paper, the walls are only air,

There’s a whole wide world of colour waiting out there.

Alto/Tenor: (Sustained, swelling chords) Oooooh, push it wide.

[Chorus]

(The rhythm opens up, becoming sweeping and expansive)

All Voices (Full Harmony):

Think outside the box! Step into the light!

We are breaking new ground, we are taking flight!

It’s an exciting adventure, a canvas wide and tall,

Creative imagination, pouring out for one and all!

[Verse 2]

Tenor (Lead):

Don’t let the familiar hold you, don’t fear the edge of the page.

Every brushstroke is a journey, every voice deserves the stage.

Bass: (Walking bassline, moving with momentum) Doo-ba-doo, walk the line, break the line!

Soprano/Alto: (Call and response) Step away! Step away!

[Chorus]

All Voices (Full Harmony, louder and more confident):

Think outside the box! Step into the light!

We are breaking new ground, we are taking flight!

It’s an exciting adventure, a canvas wide and tall,

Creative imagination, pouring out for one and all!

[Bridge]

(The music suddenly drops out. Complete silence for one beat.)

Bass: (A single, deep, resonant pedal note)

Alto (Spoken softly, but urgently): Try it for yourself.

Tenor (Sung, rising): Try it for yourself!

Lead:

Let go of the ledge,

Step over the edge,

Experience the thrill of the unknown space—

All Voices: (Crescendo, voices climbing in a glorious, complex chord)

Take that leap of faith!

[Outro]

(The rhythm returns, triumphant and joyful, then slowly winds down)

Soprano: It’s an adventure…

Alto/Tenor: Breaking ground, breaking ground…

Lead: (A joyful, spontaneous exclamation)

Wow!

(The voices resolve into a traditional, rich, and warm classical cadence)

All Voices:

Aaa-men.

A—men.

I AM A MECHANIC: WITH G_D’S HELP I CAN FIX IT!: THE AUTO REPAIRSHOP– TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS–’ I’M OK, YOU’RE OK!

I Hate You, I Love You

Thomas Harris’s I’m OK—You’re OK and the Fragility of Human Relationships

One of the most influential books on human relationships published during the twentieth century was Thomas A. Harris’s I’m OK—You’re OK (1967). Based on the principles of Transactional Analysis developed by psychiatrist Eric Berne, Harris sought to explain why people so often misunderstand one another, become trapped in destructive patterns of behaviour, and struggle to communicate effectively.

His central message was both simple and profound. Healthy relationships begin when we recognise the worth and dignity of both ourselves and others. Rather than approaching life from positions of superiority, inferiority, blame, or rejection, Harris encouraged us to adopt the life position expressed in five memorable words:

“I’m OK—You’re OK.”

This does not suggest that people are perfect or that conflict can be avoided altogether. Rather, it recognises that every human being deserves respect, even when disagreements arise. The challenge is to understand what happens when relationships begin to unravel.

Most of us have experienced how quickly affection can give way to disappointment, frustration, or even anger. A friendship can cool because of a careless remark. A marriage can suffer through unspoken hurts. Families become divided over misunderstandings. Trust can be weakened by broken promises, wounded pride, or assumptions that are never questioned.

The journey from love to hate is often much shorter than we imagine.

Yet the reverse journey is also possible. Honest conversation, humility, forgiveness, and a willingness to listen can restore relationships that once seemed beyond repair.

The following poem reflects on that fragile boundary between two of our most powerful emotions.

Hate and Love

Hate and love—

Two powerful emotions,

Travelling companions

Upon the winding road

Of the human heart.

How swiftly we journey

From one

To the other.

Often

Without pausing to ask,

What changed?

Sometimes

A careless word.

Sometimes

A forgotten promise.

Sometimes

A wounded pride.

Sometimes

A misunderstanding.

How quickly

Affection becomes resentment,

And warmth

Turns to distance.

Yet perhaps

The better question is not,

“Who is to blame?”

But rather,

“How can we begin again?”

For understanding

Can restore

What misunderstanding

Has broken.

Respect

Can rebuild

What pride

Has torn apart.

And perhaps,

In choosing

To listen,

To forgive,

And to understand,

We rediscover

The wisdom

Thomas Harris offered

To a troubled world:

“I’m OK—You’re OK.”

A Challenging Adventure

You’re writing your autobiography. What’s your opening sentence?

In this life I have sought to live it well. Despite all the difficulties, pitfalls, obstacles which I have encountered, I determined a long time ago that through those words of Winston Churchill – “Men never give up,” that I am constantly reminded that I am not a quitter but am grateful for the stubborn streak that is part of my DNA.
